soda makers and similarly functioning devices are now widespread in German households. And why not ?! The annoying lugging of water boxes
is no longer necessary, the carbon dioxide content can be individually dosed and the environment does not suffer from the unnecessary garbage that is mainly created by disposable bottles.
If you believe researchers at the University of New York, According to their study, when the mineral water is filled, our supposedly healthy
drink contains microplastic particles that we unknowingly consume and allow to get into our bloodstream.
In Germany, the quality of drinking water is excellent, which we do owe our drinking water rules and controls. Typically German.
Of course there are regional fluctuations in the quality of the pipes, water taps and water taps, which can also affect the taste. But with the help of
water filters, impurities can be filtered out quickly. Admittedly, this is nothing compared to microplastic particles.
The price doesn't change much, however, as the CO2 cylinder h & Has to be replaced more frequently, which regularly costs 8-9 euros. For many households this is a good reason to continue to use disposable bottles. But what if you fill up the CO2 yourself?

How you can fill soda bottles with carbon dioxide yourself, what you need for it and whether you really save money, that will be im examined the following article.

For filling you need 3 components:

CO2 gas cylinder with riser pipe for liquid extraction & quot; Made in EU & quot; or & quot; Made in Germany & quot; with copper riser pipe

CO2 cylinder (with valve without filling protection)

CO2 volume ll adapter

Which CO2 gas bottle do I need?

You can get a carbon dioxide gas bottle from your trusted gas dealer, who is located in the region, because there you will exchange the empty bottle for a full one.
Make sure that the gas bottle is neutral and does not have a company stamp, so that you can easily exchange it again.
Gas bottles come in different designs. Languages ??and sizes. Carbon dioxide gas bottles are available in 6, 10, 20, 30 and 50 kg. Smaller sizes of around 2 kg cannot be filled for
physical reasons.
Any gas bottle size e has a variant with and without a riser pipe. You can recognize the bottle with the riser by the large & ldquo; T & rdquo; on the bottle.
If you decide on a larger gas bottle, you have the choice between two different bottle bodies: a short gas bottle with a handle and a
long, slim version.

If you choose a 20 kg CO2 cylinder, you should choose a gas cylinder with a riser pipe or have your own one equipped with a riser pipe valve by the gas distributor.

What is the difference between a gas cylinder with and without a riser pipe?
The difference between a gas cylinder with or without a riser pipe valve is the ease of use.

< p>
When filling the CO2 cylinder, a bottle without a riser pipe must be turned upside down to introduce the carbon dioxide into the cylinder, while a gas bottle with a riser pipe
is also practically on the bottom.

The cylinders without riser tubes are cheaper and cheaper, but the gas cylinder with an immersion tube is much more practical and insignificantly more expensive. You can not get the latter in the beverage market, but from a gas dealer.

Which CO2 cylinder valves can I fill? < br /> The CO2 cylinder valves are standardized for all sparkling water bottles, therefore it does not have to be the original cylinder, a replacement cylinder does too. The CO2 cylinders are not single-use cartridges
and can be refilled as often as you like.
The CO2 cylinders are only subject to a TÜV inspection every 10 years. The last test date can be found on the sticker on the back of the bottle. Simply bring the cylinder to your gas distributor.

The cylinder body of all cylinders is made of aluminum, the only difference being the valves. These are divided into two variants
Valve with a coarse trapezoidal thread, which has a wide valve pin of 2-3 mm. This can be easily opened and closed and enables the user to Fill with CO2.
A valve with a 6 mm wide valve pin. This valve also allows filling with carbon dioxide, but much more slowly.
The CO2 adapter can fill all carbon cylinders from all Sodastream models. Otherwise, also note the instructions from the manufacturer of the cylinder valves, if any.

Instructions

Before you connect the CO2 transfer adapter to the gas cylinder, you must have the Screw in the corresponding knurled screw.

How do I fill the CO2 cylinder with gas?

Fill the CO2 cylinder with gas

< For the filling you should go outside. CO2 is not poisonous, but high concentrations can be harmful to the human body.
Basically, the filling takes place via pressure equalization between the CO2 cylinder and the gas cylinder. In this process, the liquefied CO2 from the gas bottle enters the cylinder.
The two containers are connected using the CO2 adapter, which is screwed onto the gas bottle beforehand.
To do this, turn the handwheel of the Open the gas bottle to allow the flow of CO2, which you use to open the valve at the same time. Don't let the & ldquo; hissing & rdquo; put off the gas flow,
this is normal and means it is working. The liquid CO2 flows So now put it in the cartridge until the pressure in the cylinder is equalized.
If you use a gas cylinder with a riser pipe, this process takes about 25 seconds until the cylinder is completely filled with CO2 and you are yours Water to bubble.
If the gas cylinder does not have a riser pipe, remember that you have to turn it upside down first so that the liquid phase of the CO2 can sink down and then flow into the cylinder again. You can accelerate the self-filling of the CO2 cylinder.
If you do not take any other precautions, the filling will take much longer. To speed up the whole thing, you could loosen the knurled screw a little.
But be careful: if you turn it up too far, you will break your seal, which will result in a small bang. You should avoid that.
Also note that if you use gas cylinders without a riser pipe, the CO2 cylinders will not be completely filled. However, you can trick the physical problem with this tip.
Bonus tip: Store your CO2 cylinder as cold as possible, for example in the freezer for 2-3 hours. On the other hand, you should store the gas cylinder as warm as possible (at a maximum of 20 degrees), for example in a heated room.
This creates a very high pressure in the gas cylinder, while the pressure in the cylinder is very low. Thus, the cylinder is easier to get into. Fill up with the full 300 g up to a maximum of 425 g
(instead of the usual 200 g). You can easily weigh the bottle to determine its contents.
If you do not fill it completely, it is not a problem, except that you just have to refill the cylinder . Even with a gas cylinder with a riser pipe, the
temperature difference between the cylinder and the gas cylinder is also recommended for easier filling.
However, make sure that you do not fill the cylinder with more than 425 g of CO2 , because otherwise it will use more force to work with the valve. This can happen if the temperature difference is too high,
for example if the gas cylinder has been stored at more than 20 degrees. Not a gentle method.

When is the CO2 cylinder full?
The cylinder is completely filled as soon as you can no longer hear a hissing sound. Even if you leave the valve open for longer, no additional gas will flow out due to the pressure equalization. So turn the valve
of the gas bottle back on and the filling is done.
With a 10 kg CO2 gas bottle, the content is sufficient for approx. 20-25 cylinder fillings. You can use almost the entire content (up to approx. 1 kg residual value).
Even with a decreasing amount of CO2, the pressure in the glass bottle remains constant. The use of a pressure reducer is not necessary and even prohibited, because it is only used with gaseous CO2,
to control the pressure.

What advantages do I have from filling the CO2 cylinder myself?
Advantages of filling the CO2 cylinder myself
You are more flexible: Because you already have all your utensils at home, you are not bound by time. You can decide when you want to fill up your CO2 cylinder.
You are more independent: Since you do not have to change the CO2 cylinder, you do not need to make appointments, pay attention to opening times or Relying on delivery services or stock from dealers.
You save money: As with any good investment, you first have to pay in advance. First of all, there are acquisition costs for the gas cylinder (approx. 140-160 €) and for the adapter. But these investments are
one-time and so for a refill you actually pay 1 Euro per cylinder afterwards (for a 10 kg gas cylinder with a price of approx. 22.50 Euro per filling (NRW) - this can vary depending on the region & nbsp; from 20.00 & euro; -50.00 & euro;).

For comparison: previously you paid around 8-9 euros to fill your CO2 cylinder.
You are more environmentally conscious: By eliminating garbage, which collects weekly with a 2 liter per capita consumption through disposable water bottles, you are definitely doing the environment a favor. Even if you do not use the
glass bottles for your soda maker, but rather PET bottles (since they are much cheaper), these are much more robust and durable than the ones you get in the supermarket.
